This was a "word of the day" from About.com. Here is the definition as it was given:

Ejemplo
La ciudad tiene tres hoteles y dos campings.

Traducción
The city has three hotels and two campgrounds.

Aviso
As in the example, the plural of el camping is los campings.

Is this understood in all countries? I'm not even sure how to pronounce the 'ng' in Spanish.

In my area of Mexico we say campamento, but we do say "un esleeping" for a sleeping bag; pronouncing the ing just as in English.

The word camping is used in Spain, and although we also have campamento, this last word is used almost exclusively for military and kids' summer campsites. Since we don't have words ending in g in Spanish, we pronounce it as campin, which is the recommended spelling (mostly ignored), with the corresponding plural cámpines. Words ending in ing are becoming increasingly (and stupidly) fashionable in Spain.
