The Spanishdict dictionary translates flyer as "hoja de propaganda". This sounds like a political flyer to me. "Volante" seems like it means someone who flies. Does it have two different meanings as it does in English? I'm thoroughly confused.

"Volante" is correct. I used to have a business in Mexico. I can remember ordering "volantes" from a printer. - prometidodefernanda, Jun 24, 2012

You might want to say papel volante to avoid confusion. Another possibility is folleto.

Brochure or pamphlet, I guess it depends on exactly what he was handing out (and in what country).
