El televisor y La televisión
The teacher was explaining to me the difference between televisor and televisión.
-Televisor is the television set.
-Televisión ''? i really didn`t get her point good but what i understood is that it is wrong to say ver televisor but ver televisión.
and later on, she wrote down: La televisión siempre está puesto en mi casa. (im not sure if i wrote that right).
so my question to her was: Why in the example above you used la televisión instead of el televisor?
because, since televisor is the SET then it should be used to express that the T.V is turned on instead of televisión.
she was trying to explain but i didn`t get it.

LadyDi, you are correct. This is from another dictionary:
Radio
? sustantivo femenino or (AmL exc CS) sustantivo masculino
1. (medio de comunicación) radio;
por (la) ~ on the radio;
escuchar la ~ to listen to the radio
2. (aparato) radio
3. (emisora) radio station
And here's what our Lazarus wrote on another forum:
La palabra "radio", en general, es masculina como corresponde a su terminación, pero para referirse a la transmisión de ondas electromagnéticas y al receptor, la palabra es un acortamiento de radiodifusión, que es por lo que se usa con frecuencia como femenina. También tenemos para el aparato "el radio" para "el radioreceptor". Algo parecido ocurre con "la moto" por "la motocicleta".

What Heidita describes is the same in English. Television is, strictly speaking, the programming, while television set is the apparatus, but we usually can't be bothered to add that extra word, so we routinely say things like "She bought a new television." However, just as in Spanish, most people would never say "I was watching the television set." Unless the set were doing something really interesting, like bouncing up and down, that is.
el televisor is the actual the machine. la televisión is what you watch.
so you turn on el televisor so you can watch la televisión.

En México, la televisión (la tele) se refiere tanto al aparato como a la programación mostrada en su pantalla.
Refiriéndose al aparato
1. Voy a comprarme una tele nueva.
2. A las 10 voy a ver las luchas en la tele.
3. El técnico va a venir a ver (revisar) mi tele porque se descompuso.
Refiriéndose a la programación.
1. Voy a ver la tele por internet. (En este caso en la pantalla de una computadora)
2. Los niños está castigados y no pueden ver la tele.
En cuanto a "televisor" por lo regular sólo se usa para publicitar la venta del aparato.
In aninformal Spanish is very used the contraction "tele":
Estuve viendo la tele hasta altas horas de la madrugada.
Vi una película en la tele.
Se me ha estropeado la tele.
Voy a comprarme una tele.
El tele/La tele no funciona....
Is not forma tone, but all people will understand you with this temrs.

Suffice it to say that I am far more confused than Lady Di and will probably just say "la radio" no matter what.

No creo que me equivoque mucho si afirmo que si alguien dice "he escuchado el radio" cualquiera piensa que está hablando un extranjero o un paleto (a pesar de que técnicamente sea la palabra correcta)
Estoy totalmente de acuerdo, pero parece que hay lugares donde sí se diría, por ejemplo, "he reparado el radio," refiriéndose al aparato. Yo siempre digo "la radio," pero sólo quería aclarar que el asunto no es tan sencillo como dijiste.
What part of Spain are you from Heidita? I never heard televisor used really until I went to Madrid, and there I heard it all the time. Interestingly though, while I was there, people would say that a lot of things weren't used that I actually heard very frequently. Perhaps it has more to do with age than location'

La cosa es que incluso en el RAE se define como masculino y femenino con diferente significado. Si bien indica que la radio es un acortamiento de la palabra se define como femenina. No creo que me equivoque mucho si afirmo que si alguien dice "he escuchado el radio" cualquiera piensa que está hablando un extranjero o un paleto (a pesar de que técnicamente sea la palabra correcta)
