BTW the word I was looking for is "desconcido."

It means "unknown". The negative prefix "des-" is like "dis-" in English, and "conocer" is etymologically related to diagnosis and agnostic, both with the root "gnos", meaning "to learn".

Lazarus
Hasn't she spelt the word incorrectly, surely it is desconocido as I have said in my post above.

Sorry folks... the word I entered was misspelled -- that's why the translator just listed the letter "d."BTW the word I was looking for is "desconcido."

I think you mean desconocido. This is the past participle of desconecer, to be unaware of, to fail to recognise. It is also an adjective meaning unknown, unfamiliar, and a noun meaning a male stranger.
