Hay

Hi, I'm very much a beginner in spanish and I had a question.
The sentence put as a question: cuantos canicas hay? (with an accent mark over the a in cuantos) My question is how is this sentence to be translated in english, my best guess is: How many marbles are there? I guess my main question is can Hay which means "there are" or "there is" also mean "are there" or "is there". Thanks and sorry if my question is confusing

¿Cuántas canicas hay? Need agreement with the word cuántas and canicas. Your are correct that Hay= There is/are or ¿Hay? = Is there/ Are there? Very good, Leah!

¿Cuántas canicas hay?

Yes, your translation is right: "cuántas" means "how many", and "hay" can be translated as any combination of "there is", "is there", "there are", "are there".
