Idioma Ingles o Ingles Idioma?

What is correct way of saying this, for instance I met a friend near a college, and i wanted to say to him "tuviste una clase idioma japones ahi'" He studies Spanish and Japanese respectively.

I think Quentin is pointing out that "tomar una clase" is not the most usual expression in some countries.

They both sound strange to me. What I'm accustomed to hearing is, simply, "una clase de X" where X is the name of a language e.g. inglés, japonés, español, etc.

Sounds much better in English than Spanish. I'm not sure they would phrase the... Did you take a class'...that way.

(I am assuming we are try to say an English language class) or is it Japanese language class?
I see your predicament:
una clase del idioma inglés looks like a class (type of) English class
una clase en el idioma inglés seems to say a class where English was spoken

So assuming you are correct in your original construction I would say and not >
