Can a preterite and imperfect tense can combined in a single sentence'? For instance "la primera vez (pret) conocimos vivía en Londres "

The first time we met I was living in London.

La primera vez que nos conocimos yo vivía en Londres.

The above looks fine to me, but I think if I were going to translate that English sentence I would say "Vivía en Londres cuando nos conocimos por primera vez." I think we could also say "Estaba viviendo en Londres cuando nos conocimos por primera vez."

Not only they can be combined in a single sentence, but, prototypically, the imperfect normally appears with the preterite.

Of course. La primera vez que .... I think you need a clarifier (subject pronoun) in the Spanish part (vivía=I was or you were') yo vivía en Londres.

As long as you are talking about something that occured in the past and was completed (ended) in the past
