I've changed some things to make for more natural sounding English, but my own translation is as follows:

What a joy that the three of you are together, although Matt misses his home in Buenos Aires. They are dates (de balances), and without a doubt, one of the greatest things to have happened to me was to know them.

I've looked up balances, but I haven't found anything that seems to fit

Hey Quentin
Yeah that's all could think of-something like time of evaluation and/or reflection, and your search seems to back that up. Thanks Glad you liked Sven by the way.

I think you translated it correctly. I googled a few sites and it does mean balance date, however, it is being used colloquially. Here in the States at the end of the year we will have all the TV shows showing the reviewing the year and highliighting all the major occurances of the year. That is the sense it is being used as here. He is saying that knowing them was one of the best things that happened to him this year.

So fechas de balance are when we look back over the year and add up its most important occurances (dates).

At least, that's my best guess. try this site: <http://ar.answers.yahoo.com/question/index'qid=20081205012420AAp8tXI>
