You have hit the nail on the head. They are not meant to be funny "per se", but stupidly, to try and make you think. ie, what´s thin and sticky, answer "a stick"

I don't understand it, nor find it funny. Please explain. I understand how to translate it, but not the meaning of the joke. It almost seems to me that in English the punchline would be "the missing half", but it would still not make sense to me. Does the joke hinge on the different nuances between and because I''m not getting it?
