I need to know how to say, or the verb for,

"I have been dating him (my boyfriend) for a year and a half."

Thanks so much! You all are such a big help!

"We are boyfriend and girlfriend since (made') one year and half" does not sound right.

I know we can not translate the language one by one, but I would like to know the reason.

Por favor alguien puede darme la explicación o la regla.
Not a rule but an idiom. Where in English you could say "it's been a year since ...", in Spanish one would say "hace un año que ..."

Note: the "hace un año que ..." puts emphasis on the beginning of the action. If you wish to emphasixe the ongoing nature of the relationship, use James' "llevo un año ...."

LadyDi's suggestions are good, but I would say it this way:

Llevo (un) año y medio saliendo con mi novio.

The article un here is optional.

'Salgo con él (mi novio) desde hace un año y medio.'
'Somos novios desde hace un año y medio.'
'ÿl es mi pareja desde hace un año y medio.'
and I've even heard, 'Ando con él...' and 'Andamos juntos...'

'To go out on a date' is literally 'salir a una cita' but it might sound odd to use this verb if you've been seeing him for over a year as opposed to on just one specific occasion. If I'm wrong, someone will surely correct me!

A rather oblique way of looking at it might be to think of the phrase "that makes a year... " as everyone says, hace can mean "been" it's been a year. think of it in such contexts as a time marker.

"Hace" is frequently used with time in Spanish. You can´t translate it into English as "make" or "do" in that case. Do you have a basic Spanish textbook? It should definitely discuss this, as well as the use of "llevar" when referring to passage of time.http://www.studyspanish.com/lessons/hacerago.htm

Gracias, Natasha por tu explicación.

Tengo algunos libros en español, pero están muy básicos. Solo los libros me dicen usar "hace", pero no me dicen la razón.

'Somos novios desde hace un año y medio.'

Why is "hace" used here?

"We are boyfriend and girlfriend since (made') one year and half" does not sound right.

Por favor alguien puede darme la explicación o la regla.

Gracias de antemano,
