A skip? I would never in a million years have guessed that a skip is a dumpster. A skip is a step that children take when they're playing games. wink

For anyone interested, it is called a "skip" in England but it can be either open at the top or have a lid as shown by Natasha´s example.

They come in all sizes, skips, for hire

Natasha's picture is clearly a "contenedor de basura" in Spain; a bit bigger than the average size that we have, but clearly the same thing, designed to be lifted by a garbage truck.

In that particular context, either of the suggestions given would probably work just fine, since the size and shape of the container are not really germane. So while the listener might envision a different form of garbage can, that doesn't affect the gist of the story. In other contexts, however, you might need to find a different translation.

oh sorry... ok so the context is that I was trying to tell my spanish speaking friend about this one scene in a movie where the guy jumps out of a dumpster.... but I found myself lacking the word.....

The two answers given already are indeed correct, but I think dumpster is one of those culturally-dependent words that don't translate well. A contenedor para escombros (o de basura) will not necessarily conjure up the exact image of a dumpster. A dumpster in America is a very large (usually more than 2 meters long) trash container made of heavy-gauge steel, with brackets on each side and spaced a set distance apart, so that a special garbage truck can insert lifter blades into the brackets and lift the container up over the truck for dumping.

As always, give us the full context if you want the best possible replies.
