"hispanos" means descended from the spanish...since many people in latin america are of mixed or pure indigenous descent, (and the spanish colonized in a particular brutal way) many of them object to being called "hispanic' or "hispanos" and prefer "latino" or "latinoamericano". On the other hand, people who are less politically inclined/aware may use the term hispanic. I've heard lots of US born latinos refer to themselves as hispanic...these are usually the more assimilated, less politically aware ones.
