Buenos dias and buenas noche
Hola everyone, this is my first time on the forum. I came across this site yesterday and I'm glad I did. I'm trying to learn how to speak spanish. I have a question regarding buenos dias and buenas noche, buenas tardes. Why is the form buenos used for dias and buenas used for noche and tardes? I tried to find this information in the reference area but was unable to find an answer. Just curious, thanks.

It is quite simple really Bueno is an adjective and in Spanish, adjectives have to agree with the gender, (male or female) and also the number, (singular or plural) of the noun, ThereforeDías (plural and masculine) you use BuenOsNoches, tardes (both plural and feminine) you use BuenAs
Thanks Eddy.

día is a masculine noun, and the adjective has to agree with it. Hence ¡Buenos días!noche and tarde are feminine nouns. Thus you get ¡Buenas mañanas! and ¡Buenas tardes!
Thank you

Oh Mrs. Heather! It's amazing what we learn when we aren't being graded! I want the pay grade for bilinguals. Remember my mother speaks fluent spanish and i never caught on. laugh out loud...

Hi, Nell
I know your question has been answered, but I wanted to point out that we don't say "buenas noche." We say either "buena noche" or "buenas noches." I really don't know why we usually use the plural when we're wishing someone a good night. I guess it's just the customary usage.
By the way, welcome to the foro! There are a lot of experts here, along with those of us who help where we can.
Que hombre más modesto, jeje. Calvo, how can you not consider yourself qualified'

That's OK Nell, it's just that I was about two hours behind everybody else.
Not just you. I answered a different post and then deleted my reply when I saw it had already been answered.

I also wondered about this. Thanks for asking it Nell and thanks to you two who replied.
