How you say "first place" in spanish?
I've looked all over, but I still don't know how. I am working on a Spanish essay and i need to know how to say "first place" as in a first place winner, or "he won first place in the competition".

Otherwise it sounds completely out of place, especially if there is no doubt about who we are talking about. To me that spurious "'él" make the sentence sound like:
ÿl quedó en primer lugar en la competición.
He -and I mean he and no one else- won first place in the competition.
But:
Quedó en primer lugar en la competición.
He won first place in the competition.
