He vista este título en un periódico:
Zapatero "dará la batalla" para estar en la cumbre financiera mundial
Lo pienso quiere decir:
Zapatero "will battle" to be on the summit of global finance
No estoy seguro de qué 'la cumbre' significa.
Quiza es al igual que "en la cima de la 'montaña'", pero, quizás significa que "en una reunión".
Qué piensas?

Not here, James.
In this case he is not talking about being at the highest level...but he wants to be invited to the meeting of the richest countries , a meeting which is taking place in the States and Spain has not been officially invited.
I have found this:
the finance ministers from the world's eight richest countries will meet to plan the G8 summit.
So in this case, we are talking about "summit", probably also meeting.
Tension is expected at the meeting
I realize this is an old thread, but in reading the news today, it seems that "la Cumbre" here was definitely Summit Meeting.
El presidente del Gobierno, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, reitera un mensaje de prudencia y paciencia sobre la presencia de España en la Cumbre del G-20 del próximo día 15 en Washington para la reforma del sistema financiero.

Todo indica que es asi: Zapatero luchará (dará su mejor esfuerzo) para que su país logre tener las mejores finanzas a nivel mundial.

You may (like George Orwell's pigs) argue that some are "more equal" than others but, as Natasha said, the origin of the phrase "summit meeting" is that it was a meeting of those at "the highest level" (with intended analogy to mountains, etc.). It may be the case (probably is) that participants, themselves, believe that more subtle distinctions of ranking could/should obtain but, certainly, from the viewpoint of hoi polloi (the common herd) any participant in a summit meeting is a "big shot".

Pensé que "la cumbre" se traduciría como "summit", pero "summit" podría significar "top of" or "meeting", per eso fue la significa quiero saber, en lugar de la palabra.

Similarly, you may want to be at the "summit" (top of) of something, and not want to go to the "summit" (meeting) perhaps because you think you're so big that you don't need a meeting with others.
It's subtle, but the difference is there for me.

Even when "summit" means a meeting, it means a meeting at the highest level. The basic meaning is the highest point -- of a mountain or whatever.

Significa que estará en el punto más alto, pero siendo Zapatero, debe de tratarse del punto más alto de la corrupción o la estupidez, porque otra cosa... Comentarios políticos aparte, "summit" se ajusta a la idea.
