We are told that esperar translates 'to hope' and 'to expect'. In English we differentiate between these two meanings, how can this be done in Spanish?

During an episode of LOST Sayid says: 'I have hopes, not expectations' -how would this be translated'

esperar...it´s to wait.....for something, for someboy arrives, etc..also, when u say: i hope so:...decimos, eso espero.....like a will, una esperanza.......
