The full phrase is "athletic conditioning." For example: Weight training is important for athletes to improve their conditioning. It's related to being in shape, but not exactly the same. How would you say this'

The first idea that comes to my mind is related to behaviourism (Skinner et al.) and mind control, but I guess it is possible that other countries use it to talk about getting into shape. In this context, I'd say "puesta en forma" (getting into shape).
The second idea that comes to mind is related to hair care (conditioner).
