Ok, VIN stands for vehicular identification number so I guess in Spanish it would be, "número de identificación vehicular." I just don't know if you want to say that every time.

I think the VIN number is not implemented in all countries. By example, we don't have an equivalent in Argentina. There we use the chassis and motor serial numbers to identify a vehicle. Imported cars may have it, but not the ones manufactured there. But if you need just to explain what VIN means, I would just use "número de identificación del vehículo".

Isn't "numero de placa" the "license plate number"? The VIN is a much more elaborate number that encodes the manufacturer (Honda/Ford/Volkswagon) the model and the particular automobile and is about 15-20 digits long (maybe, alfanumeric, I don't remember).

True enough. In México the vehicle serial number is referred to as the "numero serie" as printed on the "tarjeta de circulacion vehicular"

The plates here are "placas"

A bit late, but for future reference:

For Spanish-speaking people in the U.S., it's "Número vin" or "Número de vehículo"

In México it would be "número de identificación vehicular" or "NIV"

Sadly, I don't know about other countries.

You can always visit a particular country's government site to learn more.

I'm sorry...I just tried to help....what I wanted to mean is that no common spanish speaker will understand "número vin" ......Common identifiers for vehicles are "número de motor" (...the serial number of the engine) or "número de la patente" (the characters on the plate)...the last it is exactly the same as "número de registro" (register number...which toghether to the "número de chassis" are used only by a vehicle registry office or a policeman verifying the complete ownership of a vehicle).....so the most common identifier of a vehicle is " el número de patente" or just " la patente"..
( I'm sorry again...I'm a spanish speaker trying to improve my english..)
