a build (noun)

Question

2007 Playground Build attracts volunteers, celebrities (http://www.aaos.org/news/bulletin/marapr07/youraaos18.asp)

This is an event where volunteers, etc, gather to help build a particular project.

I am thinking that the best approximation would be, "un convite de construcción," but I would appreciate someone else's opinion since I cannot find any definition in any dictionary.

Gus, you are half right. It is a process of construction, but the word "contrucción" alone does not give any idea as to what type of "construction" it was. "Construcción por convite," on the other hand, does exactly that. A "convite" is a gathering of people with one particular objective in mind. Usually, to do some community or social work that is required but for which there is no money. The work is done by volunteers, etc. not necessarily qualified tradespeople. The words 'construction? and 'project? are more general and usually are carried out by tradespeople.

Instead of a build couldn't you use "un proyecto"

Hector, as you probably know (judging from your excellent English), one way to make verbs into nouns in English is to form a gerund by adding the -ing suffix. Therefore, we can say things like "Baking pies is a good way to spend a rainy day" or "Trash collecting attracts volunteers." With the verb "to build," however, we encounter a problem, because "building" has another common meaning, so "Playground building attracts volunteers" sounds like we are talking about un edificio. However, the basic meaning is just construir.

You certainly know better than I how to phrase this in natural Spanish, but I wonder if you could change the idea slightly and say something like "Voluntarios, celebridades se congregan para construir patio de recreo."
