What is th difference between the words Mas and Más?

I found this passage in the bible that says;

Spanish:
Mas Pedro le levantó, diciendo: Levántate, pues yo mismo también soy hombre.

English:
But Peter took him up, saying Stand up; I myself also am a man.

So my question is how does the meaning of mas translates into but? and what is the difference between this más and this mas? Thank you.

Because "más" and "mas" are two different words (albeit, homophones) and that's the point of writing the accent. "mas"=but/however "más"=more.

Maybe homophones, but sound differently: "más" is what is called tonic, but "mas" is not. If you are reading them aloud the same way, something is wrong. The difference can be seen in a spectrogram, if you know how to read it.

Certainly know what it is (they are) but don't have much experience reading them (but not for want of seeking them).

Cherub, serious question: Does your dictionary not give two separate listings for these words? It should.
