This means something like: to do it whatever you want to do, even though the result may be disastrous....or do it because you want to "show" somebody you are right...

Look at the definiton:

salirle a alguien algo de las narices.

  1. loc. verb. coloq. darle la gana.

Seen in the newspaper: Princess Leticia got her nose fixed. she thought it didn't look good enough. WEll, so they are saying now:

Lo hizo por narices.

Which is playing with the original meaning (she did it for her nose) and the figurative one( she did it in spite of all the talk that would cause).
