Hace que to describe the past

Is this sentence right? "Hace un par de meses que [ dejé ] esa empresa." This is what my book says, but I thought you would use the present tense in these cases. Gracias!

You use the past tense because "hace + time period + que" means "time period ago that."

"I left that company a couple of months ago."

Think of it as meaning "It has been {a time period} since..."
