In this sentence, "No salgas diez minutos antes de la clase," why is the subjuntivo presente form of salir used? I would expect imperativo or regular present tense

Subjunctive is used for negative commands, because it is like:

Quiero que no salgas...
Te pido que no salgas...
Te ordeno que no salgas...
