Escribano

I have a Mexican song in my collection:

Cuervo, I suppose, refers to a raven or a crow. Which would it be, or is it a generic corvid? What is the escribano? A scrivener, the dictionary says, or perhaps a bird, a bunting, called escribano. But my Spanish teacher, who's lived in Mexico for some time, insists it refers to a beetle. Anyone know which it would be? The escribano in the song appears to be a cynic, but, as far as I can figure out, he has managed to make the raven depressed. Any thoughts? Thanx.

The bird looks best in this context. On the other hand I have a song (flamenca) entitled "Testamento Gitano" that contains "escribano" and in that case it clearly means "scribe"/"notary(public)".
