Mary-Ann, I think the fish you are mentioning is called a gar. I have eaten it myself.
Alligator Gar. My grandfather caught 66 lbs gar in 1950s in Guadalupe River, Tx

Mary-Ann - occurs to me that maybe there is no English translation. So give us the order + family + genus + species and you'll already have a nice Latin name for which there may or may not be an English equivalent. Good luck.
