Thanks!

I'm sure you are right... except that last week my friends in Yucatan used "contar un chiste" when asking for funny anecdotes that had happened in the last few days.... so maybe it could be a regional thing''

Thanks for that eksned!
I bet the patient must have been a little worried after being asked that and wondering how the foreign doctor gained a qualification in medicine!

Thanks for the suggestions. And I agree with James, I wasn't looking to tell a joke, rather relay an amusing story, which I can tell you if you'd like, just for you Tim. lol.

My stepdad was a doctor. He travelled to South America with a charitable organization that provided free health care to the indigent people who didn't normally get any healthcare. He knew some basic Spanish and some medical terms, enough to get the idea of what was wrong with someone. His accent or grammar was not 100%.

He was getting a medical history from a patient and asked him "Cuantos anos tiene usted'" Anos not años. The guy looked very surprised and responded emphatically "Solamente un!"

True story.

yes, that's true, as chiste is a made up story, a funny story can be but is not necessarily made up.

te voy a contar algo gracioso

Yes, I like that. And I actually meant to mention "cuento gracioso" in my first post. But my main point was that chiste is not the right word here.

I would say.

te voy a contar algo gracioso

La palabra chascarrillo sí es una palabra conocida, pero rara vez usada como tal. O sea, no va la gente diciendo, espera que te cuente un chascarrillo...pues no.

But a funny story is not the same as a chiste. The former is true and the latter is made up.

I think the suggestions eksned provided are pretty good, but here's another option I've heard, with its definition from the RAE.

chascarrillo.
(De chascarro).
1. m. Anécdota ligera y picante, cuentecillo agudo o frase de sentido equívoco y gracioso.

Definition from WR:
m. Anécdota jocosa o ingeniosa.
