preterit vs. imperfect-I think I've got it roughly
I am trying to get familiar with some of the irregular preterit verb forms and thought it would be good practice to form sentences. I think I may be using the preterit sometimes when I should be using the imperfect. I thought I would stop at the first four until you experticons gave me the green light that at least I'm close to right and not drilling the wrong concepts into my head.
Tener=to have: preterito=had
Estar=to be: preterito=were
Yo estuve en casa anoche.
Tú estuviste lista cuando yo llamé.
A Marco estuvo cansado despues cena ayer.
Poner=to put preterito=put
Saber=to know preterito=knew

You put me in a bad place ---| Me metiste en un lio. Would be one possibility.
P.S. Another (decidedly more vulgar) possibility would be -- Me metiste en la mierda.
It just dawned on me why you were using the personal A as you were. You probably have seen sentences like "A Marco le gusta tocar la guitarra," and thought that the A had to go with the person's name. But in this sentence, Marco is NOT the subject. Tocar la guitarra is the subject, and Marco is the object. (Playing the guitar (subject) pleases Marco (object))
Am I right'
That is a tough queston to answer!
I would say look at how the word is conjugated then figure out if it is talking about the past or if it is talking about a specific point in time.

I would use meter rather than poner, but poner is probably fine.
What does this mean?
Su what?
I would use "sabían que..." in the last one.
You put me in a bad place ---| Me metiste en un lio. Would be one possibility.
Yes, at least in Spain it would be more common to say:
metimos...
or
aparcamos....
As usual. ![]()
Thanks for your attention to detail.
Thanks for confirming my hunch. (See my note above about poner vs. meter.)
Poner is more like to place an object, while meter is to put an object into something.
is correct to say " Pusimos el coche en el garaje"?
I think it`s sounds? better to say:
When saber is conjugated to the preterit, its meaning changes from "to know" to "to find out." Therefore, "tú supiste" means "you found out" or "you learned." Similarly, María lo supo means Maria found it out. To say "Maria knew it yesterday when I told her," we say "María ya lo sabía ayer cuando se lo dije."
"You put me in a bad place", like you've done something to me to put me in a figuratively awkward position.
Ah, position. In that case, I would use posición or situación. Me pusiste en una mala posición.
The personal A is never used for the subject of a sentence, as you were doing.
"You put me in a bad place", like you've done something to me to put me in a figuratively awkward position.
It looks like I need to go over the proper use of the personal a. ![]()
