The verb "ahijar" comes from a+hijo (son), and it means to adopt, to mother (lit. to make someone your son).
"Ahijadero" is formed from this verb and the suffix -ero, which refers to a place where something happens. The word refers to a pasture where sheep can be raised (and also mothered).
