I'm sure it's not easy, but I'm guessing that the song lyrics referred to by the OP are these:

I've been throwin' horseshoes over my left shoulder
I've spent most all my life searching for that four leaf clover
Yet you run with me chasing my rainbows honey I love you too that's the way love goes
That's the way love goes babe that's the music God made
For all the world to sing it never gets old it grows
Losing makes me sorry you say honey now don't you worry
Honey I love you too that's the way love goes
[ piano ]
That's the way love goes...

From the context, it seems clear that the writer is referring to an attempt to obtain luck.

Now James,
Have you ever tried to play horseshoes that way'Well, neither have I, but I bet it's not easy.

I would disagree with that interpretation.

I think that this is a sort of joke that combines two superstitions. The first is throwing salt over one's left shoulder. You would do this do avoid bad luck (supposedly by blinding the devil). The second is a lucky horseshoe, which is supposed to "catch" good luck. So this person is apparently in desperate need of some good luck, and has decided to throw a horseshoe over her shoulder.

It's silly, and not supposed to be taken seriously.

That's a new one to me, but a good one.

It means "doing things the hard way"
