See this Wikipedia page (in Spanish) where the word caravel is used a couple of times. The pictures may also help to see the difference between The Niña, and Pinta which were caravels and the Santa Maria which was of a different design.

En el Insituto de Navegación, debemos construir una carabela auténtico.

tenemos que construir instead of debemos,but I thing your version is also correct depending on the time tense. auténtica instead of auténtico because carabela is femenine.
