Intellectual property

Just a question to clarify.....let me see if I have this right.....SD plans on keeping the Phrasebook.....which was built by the Forum members.

SD plans to keep our questions and answers archived.....which was built by the Forum members.

So they want to keep our intellectual property, but they don't want to keep us?

Wow.

Never thought of it that way. Good point. Anyway, shutting down the forum does not make me feel valued. There's a human element here that's being thrown overboard...for profit or whatever. Lots of hurt feelings I would think. - Sassette, Oct 12, 2017
I'm willing to bet that the terms and conditions that nobody (me included) cares to read when we sign up anywhere in the web have this covered. - 00fac92a, Oct 12, 2017
And 99% of the Flashcards were built by the Forum members. - Echoline, Oct 12, 2017
@ Guillermo - I am not convinced of that amigo. - ian-hill, Oct 12, 2017
@ Echo - and many of the Reference articles. - ian-hill, Oct 12, 2017
It is customary that post authors retain the copyright, but by publishing it in a forum or similar they are granting a perpetual right to use what is written, even in a modified fashion. - aleCcowaN, Oct 12, 2017
I'm not sure. Just assuming. I don't believe anybody will sue SD anyway. - 00fac92a, Oct 12, 2017

I'm no lawyer, but I do believe that any thing that anyone contributes to any forum becomes the property of that forum.

Winkfish IS a lawyer. Maybe he will chime in and verify. Maybe rac1 can contact him to find out.

I'm sure that legally it does, but I was just trying to point out that Forum members have given much to this site volumtarily which has benefitted the site greatly. I do not think that it is moral to use our product when they have unilaterally decided to - Echoline, Oct 12, 2017
kill us off. This was a real community, populated by real people with real relationships. Our contribution was also real, and our contributions were a large part of the basis on which they were able to sell advertising. - Echoline, Oct 12, 2017
But they have said they will leave the content accessible. Whilst the forum is open there is nothing to stop you copying it and editing the original post so it is not readable. I like sharing and reading what others bring to the table. If they ar - Mardle, Oct 12, 2017
I wouldn't want to mess up my contributions. If there is someone out there trying to learn Spanish and my articles and answers of the past will help, I will be glad for it. - Daniela2041, Oct 12, 2017
A vote (my final vote?) for that comment by Daniela. - jtaniel, Oct 12, 2017
I agree D. I am pleased if someone reads what I have written, and it would be petty to edit/delete. However, if an individual feels that way they are free to delete their contribution whilst forum is open - Mardle, Oct 12, 2017

Hello Echo When the big breakup happened in 2012 I seem to remember that members leaving could ask for the input they had made be deleted as the copyright belonged to the authors.

I could be wrong.

WE all know someone who knows the rights and wrongs of my belief. Send me a PM and I will tell you who it is.

I sent you a PM at 3 this morning with my personal info. Did you get it? - Echoline, Oct 12, 2017
Did the same thing happen n 2012? - aileribel, Oct 12, 2017
Different reasons, similar results. - Gekkosan, Oct 12, 2017

At 3:00 this morning that same thought was bouncing around my head Echo. Coupled with the fact, which should be obvious to all, that the progression of these facets of SD will probably cease in four days time.

Languages are living things, and language sites should therefore strive to be the same, but SD is cutting its own throat by letting the lifeblood of this site slip away, or even worse, forcing us to depart.
