This is a word that is rare but normal in Spain and rarely used in most of the Spanish speaking world.
In Argentina it is always used with a poetic twist. For instance "la umbría europea" means the UK, the Netherlands, North Germany, Scandinavia, etc, because even during Summer everything casts long shadows and if there is any tree, bush or build, the soil remains in the dark. And also because of the Barbarians.
Though I know the word I would use "bosque cerrado" and "sombra permanente", as needed, to mention umbría and communicate effectively with others.
