When we get to this problem in my classes, I tell the students to just stick with the English "Y" sound for both "y" and "ll". They will be understood by any native speaker.
We have videos that we play from various sources and the students comment on the many differences that they hear in the pronunciation of these letters, which cause them to ask which one is correct. I point out that each one of them is correct in its region.
The English "Y" sound is predominant in the California-Mexican dialect so I tell my students to follow that version.
