Accent on los comics

the o in cómics is accented in Spanish. Why is that? I would think since it ends in an s the second to last syllable is stressed, so why the accent?

My guess is because the word is cómic, which needs one per the rule, and is pluralized in an unusual way, taken directly from English. But I don't know that for sure. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 6, 2017

Words ending with -x -ps and -cs include tilde when they are stressed in the penultimate syllable:

látex

tórax

áspics

cómics

fórceps

bíceps

All are dealt as consonantic sounds which are not plain s.

HI bella, welcome to the forum smile

Bosque is right, as the word is taken from English it follows a different rule.

Look, you can check it on the Royal Academy

cómic

Del ingl. comic.
