Gary is known Darla for a long time.

Bienvenida al foro. Lo correcto sería: Gary has known Darla for a long time.

This is expressed in present perfect in English.

Este tipo de frase se hace diferente en inglés que en español.

Creo que se diría en español: Gary conoce a Darla desde hace mucho.

Pero en inglés es muy semejante a:

Gary ha conocido a Darla durante mucho tiempo.

(Esto no es lo que diría en Español, solo es para mostrar lo literal).

Soy anglohablante nativo.

There is a construction X is known to , but except for rare legal uses most people associate it with the phrase X is known to the Police.( Implication he has a criminal record)

I agree with Bosque that the more usual use is in the past tense - here has known.

If my example was in the past tense it takes another step back and would be 'X has been known to the Police for a long time'
