Preterite conjugations

Question

So, I am correcting one of my quizes. I got one of the questions wrong. It's two names: Gerardo Y Matias and I had to conjugate jugar. I put Jugimos. Is that wrong? What would be the correct conjugation?

That is wrong on two levels:

Jugimos does not exist. Jugamos would be the correct preterit for we.

But Gerardo y Matias are not going to be we, it is going to be they.

So I think you would need jugaron.

Here is the conjugation table for jugar, you can put any other verb in to find the equivalent table. You can see that jugaron is the form for ellos, and jugamos for nosotros. You will not find jugimos anywhere in that table.

I guess I could have added -imos is the correct ending for er/ir verbs, but for -ar verbs it will be -amos. :) - bosquederoble, Oct 3, 2017

The ending -imos only happens with regular verbs ending in -er and -ir, not not in -ar, like jugar. Eg.

hablar - hablamos beber - bebimos vivir - vivimos

Regardless of the correct conjugation, the sound of the letter G in jugar should remain the same for the entire conjugation, like the combinations ga, go and gu, but you must write it as GU before -e and -i so you have the same sound: gue, gui. Notice that ge and gi sound exactly like je and ji, a different sound. In other words, even assuming that the correct ending for jugar was -imos (and it is not!), the correct spelling should have been "jugUimos" (again, this word does not exist), since "jugimos" sounds like "jujimos".
