There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game..

En Inglaterra se hacen bates de críquet de madera del sauce blanco porque tiene un tronco alto y recto.

In England they make cricket bats from the wood of the White Willow because it has a tall, straight trunk.

When I was a Peace Corps volunteer in the English-speaking Caribbean the men were nuts about cricket. At the time (the 80s) the West Indians were the best in the world. - mstivers, Sep 28, 2017

El sauce llorón, que en mi lengua materna llama sauce triste, si miramos mejor no esta triste en absoluto, sino un árbol muy decorativo y útil porque podemos plantar en las orillas de ríos y en una tierra húmeda y vive cien años.

The weeping willow, which in my mother tongue is called sad willow, if we look at it better, is not sad at all, but a very decorative and useful tree because we can plant on the banks of rivers and in a wet land and it lives hundreds of years.

Las raices de los sauces llorónes pueden hacer problemas con fosas sépticas.

The roots of weeping willow trees can cause problems with septic tanks!

Yes , they clog up all our creeks and waterways they are a real problem in the bush. - ray76, Sep 28, 2017
But isn't that true of all trees, or no? - rac1, Sep 28, 2017
i think you're right Amby :-)!~ - Jraider, Sep 28, 2017
I think it is true of all trees to some extent, but weeping willows are notorious culprits. They have massive water- and nutrient-seeking root systems. - AnnRon, Sep 28, 2017

El sauce es la más facíl árbol de propagar desde una rama plantada en el suelo.

The willow tree is the easiest tree to propagate from a branch planted in the ground.

Willows contain a plant hormone that promotes rooting so they are easy to propagate. A cut branch can actually be stuck directly into moist soil in the summer and roots will develop after only a few short weeks. To root other times during the year, you can start them in a vase of water and transplant them outside in the spring. Use cuttings that are about 1/2 to 1 inch thick in diameter and about 12 - 16 inches long. You can pound them into the ground with a rubber mallet until only a couple of leaf nodes (1-2 inches of the cutting) remain above the ground. You can also tie bundles of cuttings together (each about as thick as a pencil and about 3 feet in length) and lay them horizontally in shallow trenches. This will create a dense "fence" effect as the cuttings sprout. Remember that willows are invasive and grow massive roots. Keep new cuttings well away from driveways and sidewalks, foundations and septic systems.

Había un sauce (gatito?) a que mi abuela y yo caminabamos y recogimos las ramas con sus peludas flores. Me supuesto que es de donde el árbol consiguió su nombre.

There was a Pussy Willow tree that my grandmother and I used to walk to and pick the branches with their fuzzy flowers. I suppose that is where the tree got its name.

Mientras tomaba copas en la ribera del río, empezó a ver todo tipo de bestias raras revolcarse en el lodo debajo de los sauces.

While he was sipping the sauce on the bank of the river, he began to see all types of strange beasts wallowing in the mud below the willows.
