Vaya Sam. ¡Qué es una idea ... estupenda!
This was copied from the transcript of the show, episode 4 of @extra Spanish.
My confusion is with how the "Qué" is used with the "es".
I understand the gist of what she is saying... She thinks his idea is stupid but doesn't want to say it. But I am confused with the grammar. Is it correct to use Qué and es together here?
"Qué es una idea"
This seems like a more general question... asking what an idea itself is.
"Qué idea estupenda"
This seems more like what she wants to say. "What a great idea". But she uses a "es" in there which is confusing me. I think she is saying...
"What is an idea... great."
Or
"That is an idea... great." But I think it would need to be "esa" not "que".
Anyone want to explain it? My best guess is that she surprised and her grammar isn't perfect. Or perhaps it is OK grammar and I haven't learned it just yet.
Edit: here is the link https://youtu.be/SnN8VroqOfI?t=4m49s it should start at 4 mins and 49 sec automatically.
En cualquier caso, muchas gracias!

Qué...es una idea estupenda.
to me this looks like:
She is disappointed to she says....
¡Qué dices!
but then she changes her mind and says.
qué........................¡es una idea estupenda!
Qué has nothing to do with what follows.
I'm unsure Joe. I think if it were "What is an idea... great" then the first part would need to be a question: ¿Qué es una idea? íEstupenda! But even then it wouldn't really make sense.
Your other alternative "That is an idea ... great" would indeed need "esa" or a similar subject pronoun.
The only thing I can think of is that it is an abbreviated sentence, with a typo on the accented é, but that's really stretching it:
¡[Creo] que es una idea ... estupenda! - I think it is a ... great idea!
One of our native speakers may have a better suggestion ![]()
UPDATE:
Reverso-contexto confirms "¡Qué gran idea!" is a standard way to say "What a great idea!" but there are no examples that include the "es una".
Que es una idea estupenda.
It Is as if she said.
Yo creo que es una idea estupenda. (She shortened it)
I think it Is a great idea.
After watching it I think it's just "what an idea...pause...great!
Hi shower, if you send us a link of the video (time please) or a copy of the transcript , that would be great.
Seeing what you have so far, I have no idea.
Que es una idea estupenda.
It Is as if she said.
Yo creo que es una idea estupenda. (She shortened it)
I think it Is a great idea. Estupendo/a means great.
