daybreak

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game..

2: Los viajeros se despertaron al albor.

The travelers awoke at daybreak.

El martes pasado, mi esposa y yo nos despertamos al albor para ver entrar nuestro barco en la Bahía de los Glaciares- fue una experiencia maravillosa aunque no logramos ver el oso que algunos vieron.

Last Tuesday, my wife and I awoke at dawn to watch our ship enter Glacier Bay- it was a marvelous experience even though we did not manage to see the bear that some people saw.

I had the advantage that we could just drive 3 hours to get to the ship, only had to pay for parking for the week, so much cheaper than most cruises. :) - bosquederoble, Sep 25, 2017

Desde los albores del tiempo, los hombres han intentado entender a las mujeres...no lo han logrado.

Since the beginning of time, men have tried to understand women.....they have not succeeded.

Quiero levantarme temprano, así de vez en cuando veo el albor maravilloso de verano, pero en el invierno prefiero dormir hasta más tarde , porque los albores no son tan espectaculares.

I like to get up early, so from time to time I see the wonderful summer dawn, but in the winter I prefer to sleep later, because the dawns are not so spectacular. enter image description here

In the old days they delivered milk :-)! - Jraider, Sep 25, 2017
In the UK the paperboy puts the paper through the letterbox, which is in the front door so we would say to people's houses. Very few people now have milk delivered because the supermarkets sell it as a lost leader. - Mardle, Sep 25, 2017

"Despertarse al rajar el albor" es un dicho inglés.

"To wake at the crack of dawn" is an English saying.

Cuando oigo las urracas cantando en el albor mi vida comienza de nuevo con alegría.

Un coro de pájaros en el albor.

When I hear the magpies singing in the dawn my life begins again with joy.

A chorus of birds in the dawn.

Albor. alba , aurora y amanecer son palabras parecidas. Su uso no es idéntico. .

At daybreak, however, those nearing the town at the Dorogomilov bridge saw ahead of them masses of soldiers crowding and hurrying across the bridge, ascending on the opposite side and blocking the streets and alleys, while endless masses of troops were bearing down on them from behind, and an unreasoning hurry and alarm overcame them. I'm sorry to say "albor" doesn't really mean "daybreak" nor it's usually heard, but seen written in its plural form.

Albor/albores = first light in the morning (rarely used in this sense)

los albores = the very beginnings

los albores = early life (of something)

alborada = short time when night start to become more luminous

alborada = action taken very early in the morning (as the day breaks)

alborada = poem about the day break

albura = whiteness

albura = white (in eggs)

En los albores de la Patria (When/Around the time) Fatherland was born.

En los albores de la aviación Around the time Wilbur and Orville Wright were in Kitty Hawk.

La sorpresiva alborada les dio la victoria Attacking very early in the morning made them win the battle.
