Preterite vs Imperfecto?

Hi, I am having trouble understanding the difference between the two. I have looked up multiple videos and resources, but am still VERY unsure about how to determine which to use.
Would you mind looking over my homework to see whether I have used it correctly? I have two options: preterite and imperfecto and I have to choose one.

3 and 6 are wrong. The rest is ok.
