Local in English

Question

We can buy ,sell or rent a house. House is casa in Spanish.

We can do the same with a flat or apartment. Apartment is apartamento, piso or departamento in Spanish depending on the region.

How do you call in English a place that is almost always rectangular , without inside walls that is rented or sold or bought to make it a store like a grocery store, a bookstore etc.

We call such a place local The word is a noun.
Examples.

Vendo un local de 50 metros cuadrados.
Alquilo un local en pleno centro de la ciudad.
Tengo dos locales para la venta. Aptos para comercios minoristas.

I don't think we use the word " local" with this meaning in English. So what's the English word? I don't even know if this Spanish word is used in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world.

In England we call it a 'unit'.

Example ....

I'm thinking about renting a 500 sq ft unit to teach martial arts.

We use premises if it is a business particularly with land or we also use shop (store USA) or office, usually when they are in a town. I think of premises as a more commercial outfit. It can also cover a warehouse or factory.

We use local as a noun for a person who lives in the immediate locality or area where you are. In the UK if someone says they are popping down to their local, they mean they are going to the pub (bar) near where they live, though many of these pubs are now closing?
