To elaborate a bit, many Spanish nouns that end in -ma are of Greek origin.

There is a general rule, that nouns derived from Greek (whether they end in -ma or something else) are masculine and therefore require: el, los, un, unos, etc. and masculine forms of adjectives when available.

This is one of the major exceptions to general guideline that nouns that end in -a are usually feminine.
