windy

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Estuvo tan ventoso que mi sostén salió volando.

It was so windy that my bra came off.

Thanks, Coffelate, for the suggestion. I like it! smile

En un día ventoso y lluvioso no puedes usar los paraguas y probablemente vas a mojarte completamente.

On a windy and rainy day you can not use the umbrella and you're probably going to get completely wet.

Chicago, la ciudad más populosa del estado norteamericano de Illinois, y la cuarta más populosa (¿?) de to-dos los EEUU, tiene el apodo de “La Ciudad Ventonsa”.

Chicago, the most populated city in the North American state of Illinois, and the fourth mas populated of all the United States, has the nickname “The Windy City”.

Note: I made a big error years ago when I told a Panamanian friend that the nickname was “La Ciudad de Ventosidad” (“Fart City”).

Gracias, Heidita. "Poblada" sí es mejor. - DonBigoteDeLaLancha, Sep 14, 2017
Nothing is wrong with it Don, I was correcting your English sentence. You wrote, "mas populated" - rac1, Sep 14, 2017
Oops! I didn't notice the "más" until you pointed it out. I try to force myself to think in Spanish and then translate to English. - DonBigoteDeLaLancha, Sep 14, 2017

Aunque no tenemos huracanes, en Noroeste durante el otoño tenemos algunos días muy ventosos, y después de tal día tengo que tener cuidado porque puede haber ramas en el camino cuando manejo al trabajo en la oscuridad.

Aunque no tengamos huracanes, en el noroeste durante el otoño tenemos algunos días muy ventosos. Después de un día así tengo que tener cuidado porque puede haber ramas caídas en la carretera cuando manejo al trabajo en la oscuridad

Ok, last chance...do NOT make sentences so long. it is very uncommon in Spanish and sounds off. I mean, do what you want, but if you really want to sound "Spanish" , don't do it. People have the tendency to think that the longer, the better...not the case in Spanish.

Although we do not have hurricanes, in the Northwest during autumn we have some very windy days, and after such a day I have to be cautious because there can be branches in the road when I drive to work in the dark.

And electrical lines. - rac1, Sep 14, 2017
The road I speak of is a small country road with a lot of ups and downs and curves, no power lines, just fir trees. I have to watch every day not to hit a deer, rarely an opossum or raccoon. during daylight hours the squirrels challenge me to miss them. - bosquederoble, Sep 14, 2017
That's their job ;-)! - Jraider, Sep 14, 2017
Rabbits seem smart enough to get off the road when a car is near, although I see them diving into the brush. :) - bosquederoble, Sep 14, 2017
Squirrels have random darting behavior which I am sure is there to confuse a predator, but it makes missing them a challenge. - bosquederoble, Sep 14, 2017
Hitting a deer is dangerous for you as well. - rac1, Sep 14, 2017
I try my best not to hit anything. :) - bosquederoble, Sep 14, 2017

Chicago está buen conocido como "La Ciudad Ventosa" pero no debido que el viento, sino más bien el aire de los promesas vacías y las mentiras que provienen de las bocas de los politicos corruptos. (La historia real.)

Chicago is well-known as "The Windy City" but not because of the wind, but rather from the air in the empty promises and lies that come from the mouths of her corrupt politicians. (A true story.)

It was windy as the young traveler walked the valley of death, all he could see ahead were those dead and the darkness that concealed him.

Estaba ventoso mientras el joven viajero caminaba por el valle de la muerte, todo lo que podía ver por delante eran los muertos y la oscuridad que lo ocultaba.
