Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Todas las civilizaciones tenían una época áurea, así por ejemplo Atenas la tuvo , en la época de Pericles cuando prosperaban las ciencias y los artes, como podemos ver en la pintura de Rafael.

All civilizations had a golden age, for example Athens had this, in the time of Perikles when science and the arts prospered, as we can see on the painting of Raphael.

Thinking verb: llevar a better choice than tomar , since He carried the coin and didn't plan on drinking it.... also I may need subjunctive after "hoping" ... so I'll explore that angle as well. - Esteban_317, Sep 8, 2017
Based on Q & A: http://www.spanishdict.com/answers/182494/when-does-one-use-que-and-de-que ... I think "de que" is ok, since I don't mean "which" &thanks; for your confidence Heidi -☼- (but I must admit my Spanish grammar needs more attention: - ) - - Esteban_317, Sep 8, 2017
I believe you know your coins jellonz - yet I wonder whether having a fortune would be all it's cracked up to be. - ☼ - Esteban_317, Sep 8, 2017

Una frase coloquial que se escucha aquí en Inglaterra, especialmente en el sur, es ..... "es áureo!". Significa que .... todo está arreglado... todo has sido preparado y puedes poner en marcha lo que sea que hayas planeado para hacer.

A phrase heard here in England, especially in the south, is ..... "you are golden!" This means.... everything is ready... everything has been prepared and you can execute whatever it is that you have planned to do.

(ok I'm really pushing the boat out now and have probably made a mess of this, so take it easy on me!) grin

With Corrections:

We have something similar mate: That's golden. But my personal favourite, from Shaun of the Dead: How's that for a slice of fried gold. - jellonz, Sep 8, 2017
You are correct mate. I hope I haven't confused people with my post lol, because 'something/you are golden' can have different meanings - billygoat, Sep 8, 2017
True enough. We don't have "you are golden" but we do have "that's golden." I probably shouldn't have said "similar" as they are different terms. How's that for a slice of fried gold? - jellonz, Sep 8, 2017
I've never heard of ... a slice of fried gold! lol - billygoat, Sep 8, 2017
Watch "Shaun of the Dead" Billy. One of my favourite movies ever. Just watch it :) - jellonz, Sep 8, 2017
typos, billy, check them first, I can see at least four - 006595c6, Sep 8, 2017
I like that saying, Billy. xo - rac1, Sep 8, 2017
"You are golden." is pretty common here as a term of praise. - Jraider, Sep 8, 2017
grrrrrrr bloomin' typos! Sorry, I have just found and replaced them..... I try to write my sentences off the top of my head so at least this shows I'm not copy and pasting lol ;-) - billygoat, Sep 8, 2017

Re "áureo" and "dorado" I'm guessing the former is more poetic and the latter more prosaic, which are the two usages I have tried to reflect above. Is this correct? - jellonz, Sep 8, 2017
racist!!! hahaha ;-) - billygoat, Sep 8, 2017
Lol. I read the article Billy. The elephant in question actually tried to make himself golden. But none of the other elephants cared. C'est la vie. - jellonz, Sep 8, 2017
What a world we live in eh.... even elephants have personality disorders :P :) - billygoat, Sep 8, 2017
They've been around a lot longer than us. They probably created personality disorders. Maybe we just copy them :) - jellonz, Sep 8, 2017
áureo sounds off here, this is a rather poetic word, not really used for real things - 006595c6, Sep 8, 2017
Is that true that elephants have personaliity disorders? lol - rac1, Sep 8, 2017
What? No pink elephants ;-0! - Jraider, Sep 8, 2017
Probably Ambs... and they never forget them too! jeje - billygoat, Sep 8, 2017

Algunas familias identifican a un niño como un chivo expiatorio y al otro como el "niño áureo," quien no puede hacer nada mal. En esta situación, ambos niños pueden ser dañados psicológicamente.

Some families single out one child as a scapegoat and another as the "golden child," who can do no wrong. In this scenario both children may be psychologically damaged.

Al alcanzar mis años dorados, quizás celebre con unas cuantas cervezas áureas- pero la verdad es que muchos me dicen que esos años no siempre son tan agradables y como ya sufro artritis relativamente grave en varias partes del cuerpo he empezado a entender la realidad de eso.

Upon reaching my golden years, maybe I will celebrate with some golden beers- but the truth is that many tell me that those years and are not always that pleasant and as I already am suffering relatively severe arthritis in various parts of my body I have begun to understand the reality of that.

Aslan's "golden" mane gleamed, (ie: was gleaming) glistened and sparkled in the midday sun and Lucy felt like she wanted to kiss the beautiful lion, stroke his soft fur and run her fingers through his mane! He wasn't a tame lion, but he was a good lion! She remembered the words that he had told her a long time ago: Once a king and Queen of Narnia, always a King and Queen of Narnia! wink

Con una correccion:

¡La melena "áurea" del Aslan brillaba, refulgía y destellaba en el sol del mediodía y Lucía se sentía como si quisiera besar el león hermoso, acariciar su pelaje suave y pasar los dedos por su melena! ¡No era un león dócil pero era un buen león ¡Recordó las palabras que le había dicho hace mucho tiempo: ¡Quien ha sido rey en Narnia siempre será un rey allí!

shame, one small mistake...la había dicho, has to be le había dicho. - Heidita2 15 hrs ago

Original caption (Spanish version): La melena "áurea" del Aslan brillaba, refulgía y destellaba en el sol del mediodía y Lucía se sentía como si quisiera besar el león hermoso, acariciar su pelaje suave y pasar los dedos por su melena! ¡No era un león dócil pero era un buen león ¡Recordó las palabras que la había dicho hace mucho tiempo: ¡Quien ha sido rey en Narnia siempre será un rey allí!

I originally wrote all my caption without any help except from my Oxford English/Spanish dictionary then I simply checked the final quote against and corrected it according to the official translation (Plese see quote below) in the published book which I have in my Amazon Kindle edition of the book! The rest of the caption is totally my own work! (Original)

Extract from official publication: (I thought of you when I read this quote from "El león, la bruja y el armario: Las Crónicas de Narnia 2 (Spanish Edition)" by C. S. Lewis, Gemma Gallart -)

(el profesor) "¿Cómo? ¿Qué habéis dicho? Sí, claro que regresaréis de nuevo a Narnia algún día. Quien ha sido rey en Narnia, siempre será rey allí."

Corrijan mi español si es necesario, por favorsmile
