bellota

acorn

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Not only pigs like acorns, but it is a good toy for children, they make animals and other figures out of them.

"No desprecia pequeños comienzos" [como Zacarías dijo también], porque la pequeña bellota podria convertirse en un poderoso roble.

"Don't despise small beginnings" [as Zechariah also said], for the little acorn could become a mighty oak.

El jamón ibérico de bellota viene de cerdos que se alimentan solo de bellotas durante la última parte de sus vidas. Nunca lo he probado, y sospecho que como con muchas cosas de lujo, sería difícil para mí disfrutar de algo tan caro, porque siempre pienso en otras cosas que pudiera hacer con el dinero.

Iberian acorn-fed ham comes from pigs that are fed only with acorns during the last part of their lives. I have never tried it and I suspect that like with many luxury items, it would be difficult for me to enjoy something that expensive, because I always think about other things I could do with the money.

it's delicious mate... not really that expensive either. Lots of little Spanish tapas bars offer this -- especially on a Saturday night. - billygoat, Sep 7, 2017
Interesting...I'll have to try it. :) - rac1, Sep 7, 2017
Prior to 2007 could not be sold in USA. Now can be but runs 70-90 dollars a pound. And I don't know if that is just the regular iberian ham or the specific de bellota, which is the most expensive variety. - bosquederoble, Sep 7, 2017
wow! That is expensive. When in Spain I often just have a tapas of iberico with a beer .... about 4 or 5 euros for a tapa, couple of euros for the beer. Sorted! - billygoat, Sep 7, 2017
I've just checked a supplier's website. In England you can buy this for about £20 a pound. - billygoat, Sep 7, 2017
that is soooooooooooo not true...Jamón Ibérico is so delicious, you would def remember it forever - 006595c6, Sep 7, 2017

Si eres un jovencito pobre y débil, nunca te desanimes y siempre cree en ti mismo. Piénsate una bellota........ es pequeña y modesta, pero no debería ser subestimada, que ¡puede convertirse en un gran roble!

If you are a poor and weak child, never give up hope and always believe in yourself. Think of yourself as an acorn.... it is small and unassuming, but should not be underestimated; it can become a mighty oak!

With corrections:

Las bellotas contienen una substancia que puede envenenar a las vacas si comen demasiadas.

Acorns contain a substance that can poison cattle if they eat too many.

Okay, I looked it up: "Gallotannin in oak foliage creates gastrointestinal and kidney problems." It happens only if acorns compose 50% or more of the cattle's diet. - AnnRon, Sep 7, 2017

El camarero dice que está bien comer el cerdo porque él solo come bellotas así es vegetariano.

Esto realmente me sucedió en España.

The waiter says it's okay to eat the pork because it only eats acorns so is vegetarian .

This actually happened to me in Spain.

There is a certain stigma, in Western society at least, about eating carnivores, or even omnivores. I'm not sure where it stems from. To be honest, it doesn't worry me in the least - I'll eat anything that tastes good :) - jellonz, Sep 8, 2017
It comes from the bible, not western society. Leviticus 11:1-47..but also read this. Romans 14:1-23. :) - rac1, Sep 8, 2017
Thanks for posting, Ray. :) - rac1, Sep 8, 2017
The bible, of course. Leviticus is very specific on the matter. It's a shame I can't read it without hearing a Monty Python voice in my head :) Thanks Amber. - jellonz, Sep 8, 2017
