"I don't think I could"

Question

If I want to say "I don't think I could ever do that", would I say

"no creo que jamás pueda / pudiera hacer eso"?

I am leaning towards "pudiera" but I'm not quite sure!

I'd use "pueda"'if I were talking about achievement. As in 0I don't think I could ever run asfast as Usain Bolt".

I'd use "pudiera" if I were talking about ethics of morality, for example. As in "I don't think I could ever hurt a pet".

"No creo que jamás podría hacer eso, pero si pudiera lo haría con cuidado."

"Tomorrow I will do it if I can."

"Mañana lo haré si puedo".

I'm thinking "No creo poder hacer eso jamás." The placement of "jamás", however, sounds strange to me.

Gekko y julian, pues yo pensaba que no era un error (en Mexico al menos), mirar este hilo por ejemplo, nadie ve nada raro...a pesar de ser técnicamente incorrecto, se ve que la gente lo dice.

Hay incluso un gallego que dice que es común en su tierra, eso ya ...no lo creo, debe ser algo muy personal.

Interesting usage...here in Spain this sounds completely off. I don't know if it is technically correct...I wish Lazarus were here.

Oh, I found it, on Panhispánico de Dudas, so technically, it is actually not correct to use the subjunctive here:

Condicionales.

1.1.1. «Reales». Se denominan así porque la condición expresada es un hecho posible o realizable. El verbo de la prótasis va en indicativo, en cualquiera de sus tiempos, salvo en el futuro simple o futuro, futuro compuesto o antefuturo, condicional simple o pospretérito y condicional compuesto o antepospretérito; el verbo de la apódosis va en indicativo o en imperativo:

Lo haré si puedo.

Hang on: "mañana lo haré si pueda" is completely wrong. It would have to be either "mañana lo haré si puedo", or "ojalá pueda hacerlo mañana". - Gekkosan, Sep 7, 2017
