There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Hola E. The smoke has reached us over here. It must be bad :-(! - Jraider, Sep 6, 2017
It is bad, we don't even want to go outside, I had to wash the ash off my wife's car last night, the sun and moon are these weird red colors. The sky is completely hazy. - bosquederoble, Sep 6, 2017
I was visiting my Mom yesterday in East Portland - and my car also was covered in ash from the Eagle Creek fire. Where I live there is a different set of fires. My son said it was as if everyone in town had fired up their bar- b ques (smoke low & pungent) - Esteban_317, Sep 6, 2017

It is always difficult to guess when we should put away the cushions on our deck- If we do it too late, they get sodden from the storms that arrive every autumn and it becomes impossible to put them in the garage without creating a mess, but if we do it too early, we cannot fully enjoy some of our region’s most refreshing and pleasant days.

En algunos restaurantes te dan un tazón para empapar tus dedos. ¡No bebas de el!

In some restaurants they give you a bowl to soak your fingers. Do not drink from it!

Lol - I've seen it done Amber. And I've just discovered a faux pas in Spanish is a "metedura de pata". Why "de pata" I wonder? - jellonz, Sep 6, 2017
pata: leg...I find it very similar to English, actually, even though our saying is bader...as my friend would say, after all it is not the same to put your foot in something than put your leg in something, right ;) - 006595c6, Sep 6, 2017
I always thought "pata" was used for animals, "pierna" for people - not so Heidi? I guess all three English, Spanish and French, can mean "false step." - jellonz, Sep 6, 2017
Oh, and I like your friend's perspective. It would definitely be worse to put your leg in something, rather than just your foot - especially if it was your mouth :) - jellonz, Sep 6, 2017
jejeje, genial, worse than your foot in our mouth, niiiiiiiiice, lol, and you are right, pata is only used for animals , except in this expression - 006595c6, Sep 7, 2017

por here would sound really odd, maybe in other places it is ok, I would say: durante días - 006595c6, Sep 6, 2017
Hi Heidi. Can you elaborate on the por / durante usage. I often use "por" as Ann has here and I'm not sure why it is incorrect. Gracias. - jellonz, Sep 6, 2017
I'd like to know that too. I see examples similar to this in "por" vs "para" lessons, but I also see suggestions that "durante" is a better choice. It's probably another difference that is hard for an English speaker to wrap her brain around. - AnnRon, Sep 6, 2017
I just read something that suggests that "durante" is the preferred choice in Spain, but "por" is often used in Latin America. - AnnRon, Sep 6, 2017
Interesting. That may explain it. Thanks Ann. - jellonz, Sep 6, 2017
See my answer here: http://www.spanishdict.com/answers/296631/can-somebody-check-this por works in Latin America, not Spain, everyone accepts durante, if you don't need either, don't use it (here i think you do, but if you said cinco días for example you - bosquederoble, Sep 6, 2017
Thanks Bosque. I'll use "durante" where needed from now on to be more inclusive. Cheers. - jellonz, Sep 6, 2017
I would appreciate you posted this ...either jello or ann, doesn't really matter, as using por here sounds wrong to me. - 006595c6, Sep 6, 2017
bosque, only polenta posted ,,,,and she didnt use por, I would post this question, let's see what gekko, guillermo etc would say - 006595c6, Sep 6, 2017

Cuando un hombre bebe demasiado le llamamos un viejo remojo.

Porque se gustan empapar su higado en alcohol .

When a man drinks a lot we call him an old soak.

Because they like to soak their liver in alcohol.

Not sure if this will work in Spanish.
