The day I almost drowned in the sea / ocean.

or

The day that I almost drowned....

In this case the word "that" is optional in English, even though "que" is needed in Spanish.

It is a bit odd, me ahogo is present tense, unless it is me ahogĂł. In which case someone else did it to her? - bosquederoble, Sep 2, 2017
Good point Bosque. Who knows? My translation was a little loose. You can also use the present tense to narrate a story in the past. So...that day I almost drown in the sea. I finally swim to shore.... - DilKen, Sep 2, 2017
Yes, a narrative style used even more than in English. :) - bosquederoble, Sep 2, 2017

I agree. You can tell a story in the present or in the past.

"Casi me caigo." I think anything you almost do - like I almost fell down, is put in present tense, unlike English. - Sigua, Sep 3, 2017
Yes, I think Spanish uses the present tense more than English. - polenta1, Sep 3, 2017
