Hi All,

I would like to know some important words for shopping in Spanish speaking countries? I have noticed they sometimes have a special lottery number in Latin American countries and they have asked me some random questions I do not know how to answer. Any help with this would be great.

Thanks smile

Hello!

Here's a link of important words for shopping in Spanish. Savvy Shopping in Spanish: 150+ Essential Words and Phrases

Lottery in Spanish is la lotería. It can mean: game of chance, government-sponsored game, table game (lotto or bingo), drawing (raffle), establishment (lottery kiosk) & situation governed by chance (figurative).

If you are referring to this phrase: Le cayó o Le tocó la lotería (España) Se sacó la lotería (Latinoamérica) (ganar) He won the big prize in the lottery; he struck lucky.

Hope this helps.

Regards!

Ok... Now I'm getting scared. How do you come up with answers like this!? - Gekkosan, Aug 31, 2017
@Gekkosan, I use the search engine here, Google & the dictionary from this page. - NKM1974, Aug 31, 2017
I meant the mind-reading bit about the lottery. - Gekkosan, Aug 31, 2017
On the Collins Dictionary section of this page, go to lotería. Find the information of Latinoamérica in parenthesis. - NKM1974, Aug 31, 2017
This Savvy Shopping page is fascinating. Most of it is pretty accurate and useful, but skimming through it I can find at least two expressions that could get you in trouble: - Gekkosan, Sep 1, 2017
1. It says "affectionate term for women manufacturers of artisanal goods — mamacitas" I don't know where that might be true, but in most places THIS IS NOT SO, and you'll either get a weird look, if you're female, or a slap or a beating, if you're male. - Gekkosan, Sep 1, 2017
2. It refers to seashell as "concha", which is true enough, but it doesn't warn you that in some countries that's a very rude word! So take these things with a few grains of salt! - Gekkosan, Sep 1, 2017
Mamacita & concha is pejorative in the Americas, but didn't say, specifically, which country. - NKM1974, Sep 1, 2017
