The thread suggested by Guillermo provides a nice explanation, but neither answer clarifies this: as far as I know, this is very much a Spanish (from Spain) expression. I have never heard anyone who's not a Spaniard use it.

But the expression is meaningful enough that we all understand it. Kind of like if you happen to say: "what the smorgasbord are you doing?" or "what the herringbone are you doing?" People might look at you funny, but they will figure out you probably mean "hell" or "hell" or "dickens", or something equivalent.

Different countries and regios, by the way, will also have variations in Spanish:

Qué narices Qué rayos Qué diantres Qué diablos Qué c0#0s (naughty word) Qué m13r..(another naughty word) ...you can get pretty creative in Spanish too.

Here in Spain it is very common indeed, even more common would be .
